The Green Tie Jazz Band was founded in June of 2010 and is based in Fremont, California. GTJB is a 5 piece traditional jazz band comprised of a trombone, trumpet, bass, piano, and drums. They strive to bring a fresh take on old standards all the while staying true to the ways of Armstrong, Morton, Kid Ory, Beiderbecke, and the like.
The band has played for festivals, charities, galas, private events, farmers markets, and concerts around the East Bay and Sacramento Area. They have also released a mini-album entitled Green Tie Jazz Band Extended Play. Most of the band members also play in other bands of wildly varying styles that bring a certain uniqueness to the Green Tie sound. GTJB aims to keep your toes tapping and your body grooving to the sounds of the greatest American music— trad jazz.

“The performers on the stage were the young and fresh-faced Green Tie Jazz Band, from Fremont. The first few bars of “Honeysuckle Rose” left no doubt that these young musicians are passionate about… traditional jazz.”
– Edward Ortiz, Sacramento Bee

Hey, there! I am the leader of this band. No, it’s not a typo! My name is spelled as you see it. I have played trombone for nine years. Other instruments I have picked up along the way include clarinet, drums, piano, and electric bass. If I can get my hands on it, I will learn it! I was introduced to trad jazz by John Soulis of the East Bay Traditional Jazz Society six years ago and have loved the music ever since. I enjoy many styles of music from eclectic electronic music to the exciting sounds of samba.  Besides actually playing in the band, I also run our website, Facebook page, Twitter feed, Youtube channel, Flickr photostream, and Bandcamp site. I also deal with booking and graphic design. When I am not writing, listening to, or playing music, you can usually find me playing video games, reading up on weird news, or watching my favorite flash animations.

Hello there good fellows! I started playing piano, bells, and clarinet in elementary school. I have since picked up trombone in Jr. High and sousaphone and electric bass in high school. I also have experience playing trombone in Chabot College’s jazz lab, jazz combo, and wind ensemble. Getting lost is an everyday thing for me. I also enjoy dabbling in baking and arts and crafts. Family is very important to me, dogs included. Other bands I have played in include Scout Band, a community big band, a praise & worship team for Spread Church, and the synthrock band Robodda.

I first started playing guitar the summer before I started sixth grade, though I didn’t really start playing with a group until around eighth grade. It was around that time that I decided to learn a bit of bass to expand my abilities. When I got into high school, I joined the band and learned to read music. In tenth grade, I was singing performing with a few bands, primarily in the South Bay region. I was featured in KFOX’s Last Band Standing Contest, and have played on the radio three or four times now. In eleventh grade, the band I was in played on the side stage of the Shoreline Amphitheatre for a Steve Miller/Doobie Brothers concert. That same year, we competed in a competition which allowed us to play on the Concord Pavilion stage.
I took a break from performing when I entered college. My second year, I joined Jazz/Rock Combos singing and playing bass. Here I met several people for whom I now play in a band with, and consider good friends. I joined the Green Tie Jazz Band back in July of 2010, and have been playing with them ever since.

I got started in this jazz group because I knew the leader, JohnDavid. We had both gone to the same high school so we have become good friends. I can play trumpet, euphonium, and trombone. Each player brings great feeling and talent to the group. It is a pleasure to perform with each and every one of them, and the music is always fun. Come see us perform you’ll have fun and we’ll have fun!

I have been playing the drums for about 5 years. I mainly play an old traditional jazz or swing style of drumming; but I can play rock as well as more modern styles as well. I have always been a math person and I think that being so has helped me to understand music by breaking it down into fundamental mathematical “chunks”.  I have had informal group instruction with professional drummers Eddie Metz Jr. and Pete Agraan. I have also have been a pianist for nine years now and have taken classical training and theory instruction in the form of eight and a half years of lessons.
